Position – Marine Animal Trainer - Level 1
Reports to – Manager of Marine Animals
Position Type - Full-time
We are looking for a fun, enthusiastic individual who would love to provide sensational interactive experiences for our guests! The Marine Animal Trainer - Level 1 is responsible for all day-to-day care and training of the animal collection. This position requires the willingness and ability to work flexible schedule year round, including holidays and weekends and to cross-train in all operational areas. S/he will ensure that all working environments are ‘cool places’ by demonstrating, supporting and implementing all company values.
Dolphin Quest Bermuda is located at the National Museum of Bermuda at the Royal Naval Dockyard.
Typical Job Duties
- Maintain accurate daily animal records including the recording and reporting of the Daily Dolphin Assessment.
- Complete daily husbandry procedures according to protocols.
- Administer daily vitamins and prescribed medications approved by management.
- Assist with the collection of medical samples.
- Prepare and administer animal diets and ensure fish used for the animals’ diets is of the highest quality.
- Participate in animal sessions regularly and develop skills for proper maintenance of animal behavior.
- Develop novel animal training skills by assisting with other Crew’s behavioral goals.
- Perform regularly in dry and shallow water animal interactions with guests.
- Develop all full water animal interactions with guests in the presence of senior staff.
- Demonstrate and develop effective guest interaction skills.
- Demonstrate and develop effective communication skills.
- Demonstrate and develop effective departmental teamwork skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all program related information for site.
- Assist and/or lead in assigned department project area(s).
- Successfully complete Dolphin Quest Training Lecture Series.
- Successfully complete all assigned readings and tests.
- Performing other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or related training and/or experience necessary to meet the qualifications listed above.
- Ability to adjust to changing priorities.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
- Laboratory technician skills preferred.
- Demonstration of ability to proficiently work in water environment: swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA and CPR Certification.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Job Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to fairly predictable and controllable hazards associated with having close contact with marine animals.
- Work outdoors in uneven terrain with constant exposure to sun, wind and outdoor elements.
- Move about on slippery surfaces.
- Handle hazardous materials.
- Work in cramped or confined spaces.
- Daily uniform includes wetsuit wear and bathing suit wear.
- On the job duties require long periods of time in salt-water, actively swimming, diving and working in ocean water elements.
- Daily operations require being mobile, standing, bending, stooping, crouching and squatting.
- This job entails repeated entry and exit into lagoon area with the need to hoist self out of the lagoon
