World Oceans Day Join the celebration! World Oceans Day! June 8th!

In 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the Canadian government first proposed the idea of a day of international celebration to honor the ocean, the one body of water that links us all. In December of 2008, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution officially designating June 8th as World Oceans Day. Each year, millions of people around the world come together to create an international awareness of our one ocean.

The theme for the next two years is “Youth: The Next Wave For Change”.  The aim is to challenge people around the world to view ocean protection as a way of life.

How can you join the celebration?  First you can take the“ 7 C’s Pledge” for ocean conservation.

  • Commit to making a real difference
    • Aim to be carbon neutral by reducing and offsetting your energy consumption.
  • Conserve in your home
    • Upgrade to Energy Star appliances and compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Consume consciously
    • Rethink what you need, purchase “green” products, buy locally grown foods, and choose sustainable seafood.
  • Communicate your interests and concerns
    • Let your friends, family, colleagues, and the local media know about the impact of climate change on the ocean.
  • Challenge yourself daily
    • Walk, bike, carpool, and take public transportation to cut down your carbon emissions.
  • Connect in your community
  • Celebrate our ocean

You can also “Wear Blue, Tell 2.” Speak up! Let those around you know why you’re wearing blue and share two facts about why it’s important to protect our world's ocean; or ways they can take personal action and help.

Finally you and your children can celebrate with Dr. Seuss. The colorful characters from “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish” return to help celebrate World Oceans Day.

Remember, the ocean is “Counting on You!”
