Dolphin Spotlight - Meet Liko
Dolphin Quest Hawaii is home to Liko, our playful 11-year old male. Liko was born on September 7, 2000, and has a younger sister Hali’a. Just as humans resemble their relatives, Liko, and Hali’a both have their mother, Kona’s, distinctively pink belly! Liko is not shy at showing off his pink belly. He can often be seen swimming on his back playing with his favorite toy; a giant inflatable ball. Liko will kick it with his tail flukes, sending it flying across the lagoon!
Liko, meaning ‘bud’ in Hawaiian, is a very distinctive looking dolphin. It’s not only his pink belly that stands out but also his special dorsal fin. It has an unusual scar on it from when he injured it as a youngster. Liko made headlines after our veterinarians performed a medical procedure that had never before been used on a marine mammal. They used the latest advances in human regenerative medicine in an attempt to restore a Liko’s damaged dorsal fin. Thanks to their top notch care, Liko healed beautifully! This 350 pound male is a quick learner and excels shines at learning new behaviors, particularly during a training session that is called a ‘scanning’ session. The trainers will give a specific hand signal which lets the dolphins know they can pick any behavior they want. The only rule is that each time they need to pick a different behavior. Liko is so creative and not only does he choose a different behavior each time; he will often come up with his own novel behaviors!
As part of our Dolphin Quest Hawaii Ohana (family); Liko has touched the hearts and minds of both guests and trainers alike! He is such a special dolphin and we love to share his playful nature with families and friends from all over the world who come to visit us at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii.
