Animal Spotlight - Piko
When you walk into the Encounter Club at Dolphin Quest Hawaii, don’t be surprised if you hear a sweet melody, or a voice calling out ‘Hi’ or maybe even hearing what sounds like a meowing cat…..you would be hearing Piko (pronounced pea-ko), our resident Mynah bird. Piko is about 3 years old and came to Dolphin Quest from a local rescue facility.
Piko is a very friendly and social bird who enjoys meeting and interacting with new guest by perching on their arm or shoulder. Trainers are always working on fun and enriching behaviors for Piko as well as ones that allow us to provide the best care possible. We train Piko using the same technique as the dolphins; this technique is called positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is basically increasing the likelihood of a desired behavior by presenting something enjoyable like food or praise as a reward after the behavior. Some of Piko’s favorite rewards are mealworms and fresh papaya!
Piko is a wonderful addition to Dolphin Quest Hawaii’s animal collection, so stop by and meet Piko!
